Meditation on an object is not helpful. For this reason, you must learn to realize that the subject and object are one

Meditation is not the means to Self –Knowledge. Meditation is not the goal itself. It is an important and useful tool to quiet the body, mind and emotions and allow one to enter a deep and quiet state of mind. Once the turbulent tendencies of the body or waking or dream and emotions are brought into harmony, clarity and renewed strength are available to meet and overcome each life challenge as it presents itself. Meditation will not eliminate our life challenges but can enable us to harmonize our body, mind, emotions and spirit and to focus that energy like a powerful beam of light on the challenges that lie ahead in worldly life.

The reasoning base has to be rectified from form to formless in order to discover, understand, assimilate and realize the non-dualistic or Advaitic truth. The rectified reason functions, through discerning inquiry, to dissolve the mind in pure consciousness,  the source from  where the mind rises and subsides. And as the rectified reason functions, it makes use of mind reflectively, in order to bring mind back to consciousness, which is the source from where the mind rises and subsides. There is no question of the rectified reason being an instrument of any mind. It is always the other way about.

 Sage Ramana Maharishi:-

Q: Which meditation will help me?

Maharishi: Meditation on an object is not helpful. For this reason, you must learn to realize that the subject and object are one. In meditating on an object, you are destroying that sense of oneness and creating duality. Meditate only on the Self. Try to realize that the body is not you, the emotions are not you, the intellect is not you. When all these are still
ed, you will find something else is there; hold onto that and it will reveal itself.

Q: But when I have stilled everything, I almost fall asleep!

Maharishi: That does not matter. Put yourself into the condition as deep as sleep, and then watch: be asleep consciously; then there is only the one Consciousness.

Ultimate truth or Brahman has to be grasped mentally to realize the existence of the formless witness. Once this truth is grasped mentally, then one has to cling to the formless witness. Once one clings to this formless witness mentally than the subconscious has the yardstick to accept the truth and reject the untruth. Thus deeper self-search is necessary to understand, assimilate to have firm conviction of what is what in order to get self-awareness. .
